Parents often ask how they can support their child at home and support learning. Here are some ideas from Yes, You Can Help! Information and Inspiration for Parents of French Immersion Students. https://education.alberta.ca/media/563591/yesyoucanhelp.pdf. The following ideas are ways you can help your child develop their love for learning which will also help them learn and grow in French.
Often, the things you do with your child every day, just as a matter of family routine, are the most important! You could even have your child try to do it in French. For example:
- having a young child help you load the dishwasher or set the table can be a lesson in organization and spatial relationships;
- counting the forks could help with math;
- cooking or gardening together can spark curiosity about scientific principles (why the yeast makes the bread rise or how a plant grows from a seed);
- encouraging creativity can be as simple as keeping a supply of paints, paper, glue and fabric scraps within easy reach, or keeping the cardboard box from the new fridge for a budding architect or carpenter to turn into a house, garage or puppet theatre;
- watching a television program together and then discussing it can help to develop analytical and debating skills;
- playing games of all kinds, at all ages (e.g. cards, dominoes, board games) can develop observation and reasoning skills, memory, vocabulary, spelling and math skills;
- discovering or problem-solving during a shopping trip (Where do oranges grow? If 100g costs 20¢, how much would 200g cost? Why must the meat be kept chilled?);
- belonging to a sports team or a club can develop cooperation and leadership skills;
- a vacation is a chance to learn about geography, history, and even how to use a map;
- doing chores teaches responsibility and self-discipline. First-language development A language-rich home prepares a child for, and supports, ongoing literacy development—in any language. Just a few suggestions: talk about words: words that sound funny, have more than one meaning, mean the same or are opposites, etc.;
- have fun with storytelling and make-believe play;
- use a lot of adjectives and adverbs, and encourage your child to use descriptors; ask open-ended questions (What's next? What if? What's happening? etc.);
- use starters that encourage conversation (I wonder …, Tell me about ...);
- “think out loud” as you go about routine tasks; plan together, and then, after the activity or event, talk about what you've done;
- talk about feelings, and give your child words to help her describe how he or she feels.

Help us be better neighbours!
The school has received phone calls from some of our neighbours that parents are blocking their driveway while bringing their children into the school. We realized how frustrating it can be to find parking near the school but we also want to be respectful, responsible neighbours. Please do not block driveways or remove garbage bins that are put on the street for garbage collection. Thank you!
This time of year can be very dangerous with ice! The warmer days melt the ice so rocks and sand that were put down can wash away. The school driveway can become very slippery. PLEASE...watch for buses coming out of our school parking lot! If it is icy, they may not be able to stop and we don’t want anyone walking in front of them.
Our school playground and sidewalks can also become icy. We are working with central office to find solutions for the hill by the playground but please be aware that students are not allowed to play or slide on the hill. This is simply too dangerous. Students have also been asked not to “run and slide”on the ice. Students who continue to slide on the hill or the ice will be asked to stop but will be sent to the office if they continue not to listen. We want all of our students and staff to be safe. We would ask that you talk to your children about ice safety. Thank you in advance for your support!

The Giving Tree: organized by Les Petits Soleils out of school care kids
We would like to decorate Campbelltown’s Christmas tree with NEW items that will be donated to the Strathcona Christmas Bureau. Each grade level will be assigned an item to bring in to school on a specific date. Every year, there is a significant lack of donations for adults and teens, so we are choosing to make donations that will most impact those recipients.
The NEW item, grade and donation schedule is as follows:
- Kinder - Nov. 22 - socks OR mitts for children and adults
- Grade 1 - Nov. 23 - scarves OR toques for children and adults
- Grade 2 - Nov. 26 – shampoo/conditioner OR razors & shaving cream
- Grade 3 - Nov. 27 – deodorant & lotion OR soap & body wash
- Grade 4 - Nov. 28 – toothbrushes & floss OR toothpaste & lip balm
- Grade 5 - Nov. 29 – books for teens
- Grade 6 - Nov. 30 – books for adults
- Staff - Dec. 3 – earphones/headphones OR backpacks/bags

The parent council would like to thank Superintendent Liguiori and Board Chair Boymook for coming to speak to parents about French Immersion at Campbelltown and Elk Island Public Schools. It was very informative and we look forward to learning more about the growth of the French Immersion program in our division in the coming months.
