By virtue of their age and in some cases, personal circumstances, students sometimes make poor choices which have the potential to put others at risk. This could include making verbal or written threats, having possession of a banned item in a school, making threats to oneself, or exhibiting other unsafe behaviours.

When this occurs, teachers and administrators need to figure out as quickly as possible what happened and determine the level of risk to the student and others. If we feel that students are at imminent risk or danger, we will call 911. If the situation doesn’t warrant an emergency response, we will contact Central Office immediately to fill them in on the situation and interview those involved to see what happened.

At that point, a decision may be made to initiate the VTRA (Violent Threat Risk Assessment) protocol. The purpose of a VTRA is to determine how best to support the student so their behaviour doesn’t become violent or self-injurious.

The safety of each and every student remains our first priority. The Division will work with the RCMP and other community agencies to investigate a potential threat and then determine the level of the threat.

The VTRA process involves:

  • immediate response
    • data collection
    • initial assessment
    • comprehensive risk assessment
    • intervention by a multidisciplinary team
    • longer-term treatment planning
    • follow up support

Whether there are few or many students who know about what happened, we will often send an email to the entire school community because rumours tend to start very quickly. We want parents to know that we are aware that something has occurred and we are following protocol. While it can be very scary for parents, we want you to know that we are actively ensuring the safety of all students. Most students in a school will have no idea what happened so often it is just letting families know we are not only aware of a situation, but we are dealing with it and we take it very seriously.

In these situations, we get many parents asking for more information. The school and the Division have an obligation to protect the personal privacy of all students—information that could identity of an individual, or potentially could be used to identify them, will not be publicly disclosed. We will never talk about your child with other parents and we are not able discuss other students with you. This includes any kind of a plan or steps that will be put into place. While we can’t discuss these details with you, we can assure you that there is always follow through and steps taken to ensure all student can continue learning in a safe and secure environment.

Did you Know

If your child was a part of the grade 4-6 Track Team this year, track will be starting up again on Tuesday, April 23.  Please meet Mme Rovensky and Mme Piper by the gr. 2 portables at 8:00 am on Tuesday morning. More info will follow about the EIPS Rely Invitational.

Earth Day is officially April 22 but we will be celebrating it on April 23 as a school.  During period 3, we will ask the whole school to stop using electricity (the office will still have access to computers and phones).  During this time, classes will talk about how we can be good stewards of the earth and how we can make positive impacts on the environment.  Each week, a different grade will be responsible for cleaning up the school yard so we don’t just make an impact on that day but for the rest of the year.
